SC 9th in nation in number of AIDS cases

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Health officials say poverty and a lack of access to health care are among the reasons South Carolina is near the top of the list of AIDS cases nationally.

The Post and Courier of Charleston ( http://bit.ly/MHDO6n) reports the state ranks ninth in AIDS cases with an estimated 15,000 people thought to be living with the infection.

KOKRAJHAR, India — Thousands of Indian troops marched through a northeast region Wednesday to quell ethnic violence that has killed at least 38 people, but roving bands of rioters continued sporadic attacks, ripping apart homes and setting them on fire.

Nearly 200,000 people have fled homes in western Assam state, bundling meager belongings in cloths and crowding into government camps for protection from violence that erupted late last week. Hundreds of wood and thatch houses have been burned.

The girl who changed Magic Johnson

Hydeia Broadbent was 7 when she had her Magic moment.

She was the tiny grade-schooler. He was one of the world's greatest basketball players.

As she cried, Magic Johnson reached his giant right hand out and placed it on her shoulder. Neither knew what their futures held, but they had one thing in common bigger than both of them: They were HIV-positive.

"I want people to know," Hydeia said, sniffling, "that we're just normal people."

"Aww, you don't have to cry," Johnson replied, "because we are normal people. OK? We are."

Twenty years after their first encounter, both continue to be pivotal voices for those with HIV: he the superstar who tested HIV-positive after having unprotected sex; she the innocent child infected with AIDS by a drug-using mom.
