I'm So Sick of [So-Called] Experts and Leaders!

Expert: Economic woes magnified for minorities

Want a job? Sometimes a less-than-choice job can turn into a healthy career

Publisher's Note:

The two aforementioned articles continues to evade the real issues of why so many of our youths are finding themselves disillusioned about our country's present economic woes.  Although some points and views were offered based on statistical data by so-called experts, and personal experiences, it does not provide an 'end-all' concrete solution to the myriad of unemployed workers lamenting about their present financial status.

Essentially most of us know how this country got into this economic quagmire of a mess.  To put blame on, and mentioning Republicans and Tea Party political toter voters does not, nor will not, remedy the jobless woes we face in South Carolina.

Despite the fact that there are some young adults who may not yearn to work long hours by working themselves at the work place as if they were mules earning low wages should not be looked upon as if they are lazy, or that they want their cake and eat it too.

Many of these young folks know when they are being taken advantage of by the manager/supervisor, and are looked at as if they are stupid because of their age, and/or because they lack long years of work experience.

The problem with many of the private sector businesses in South Carolina, and throughout this country for that matter, is that they tend to be MORE demanding, abusive, and greedy than non-private sector businesses.  These employers know there is a busted economy.  And they are aware of the fact if ANY employee has a problem with what they put down as law may find themselves joining the "jobless pool" while fighting to receive unemployment after it's all said and done!

Whether President Obama choose to accept it, or not, the numerous private-sector businesses, particularly the small to moderate-sized businesses are blatantly bias, racist, manipulative, abusive, and crooked in their practice of paying decent wages.

What is worse is that this 'behind close door' practice used toward the employees by the employers are known to various agencies who are there to thwart these actions immediately.  But a blind eye is turned away, and again, we continue to have "Enslavement of Workers" in the 21st Century, and as always, the answer is to get a college education.

Hell, it's the college degree holding individuals who are being subjected to this nonsense.  And it's the 20th Century way of dealing with employees that is RUINING America's economy - not the other way around!

As far as food franchise businesses goes, there are very few who  have shown, and do respect their employees.  And there are those who do not give a damn about their employees - not one iota!  For example, several employees who were working at a 'waffle joint' were cheated on their wages BIG TIME!  When was the last time you'd worked a forty-hour work week, and receive your pay of only twenty-dollars?  Exactly!

The young males and females need to work together, and NOT with individuals who continue to follow the traditional 20th Century way of doing business!

More on this later.

Home Foreclosures and Unemployment: So What Else Is New?

Free Activation for T-Mobile Phones!

Foreclosures mount, mediation fails, wealthiest Black suburb suffers

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. - A widely touted strategy aimed at keeping Maryland residents from losing their homes by bringing banks and homeowners to the bargaining table has met with little success as the nation braces for another wave of foreclosures.

Maryland passed a law a year ago that gave homeowners in foreclosure the right to mediation, if they ask for it. The Justice Department reported in a November study that there were 25 mediation programs in 14 states.

As of May 31, just 56 homeowners in the state have gotten a modification of their loan through the mediation program. Borrowers complain that lenders are more interested in foreclosing than negotiating. One borrower was horrified to discover that the bank had sold her home during the mediation process.

Painkillers, Antibiotics, Hormones . . . What Else Is In a Single Glass of Milk?

Painkillers, Antibiotics, Hormones . . . In Our Milk? YES!

Did you know that the U.S. is the only industrialized country to allow hormones to be given to cows whom we get our milk supply?  To date, I've been informing people, including my daughter who has a young son, to refrain from drinking whole milk.  The sad part about this article and other articles that were published reporting the same disturbing news is that cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products may be also affected with these hormones.  In addition, there have been numerous published media reports from parents and medical personnel about an increase in hormonal growth in childrens' breasts, and other parts of their body, that are unexplainable, but the finger pointing is aimed at the hormones and other substances that are infiltrating our milk supply these youngsters are consuming.

Are we at the point today that it's best to own land to grow our own fruits, vegetables, cows, goats, etc., to ensure our health is not in jeopardy?  Frankly speaking, I believe we have reached that point decades ago!

Hormones in milk can be dangerous

One study compared diet and cancer rates in 42 counties. It showed that milk and cheese consumption are strongly correlated to the incidence of testicular cancer among men ages 20 to 39. Rates were highest in places like Switzerland and Denmark, where cheese is a national food, and lowest in Algeria and other countries where dairy is not so widely consumed.

Cancer rates linked to dairy can change quickly, said Ganmaa. In the past 50 years in Japan, she said, rising rates of dairy consumption are linked with rising death rates from prostate cancer - from near zero per 100,000 five decades ago to 7 per 100,000 today.

Butter, meat, eggs, milk, and cheese are implicated in higher rates of hormone-dependent cancers in general, she said. Breast cancer has been linked particularly to consumption of milk and cheese.

Jobless Rate Rise in Region

Jobless Rate Rise in Region

Area counties saw the largest spike in unemployment across the state for the month of July, placing them among South Carolina's top 10 for joblessness.

Calhoun County saw the largest unemployment rate increase in the state, with its rate increasing 4 percentage points to 16 percent, according to S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce figures released Friday.
The rate shattered a previous record high unemployment rate set in March of last year. The county ranks ninth among the state's 46 counties in unemployment.

Orangeburg County saw the second-largest spike in July, with its rate rising 2.4 percentage points to 17.7 percent. The county ranked fourth in joblessness in the state.  The unemployment rate for Orangeburg County is a near record. The county's rate hit 18.4 percent in September 2009.

S.C.’s jobless: 'People around here, they're struggling'

In Orangeburg, nearly 1 in 5 are out of work

South Carolina’s jobless rate jumped to 10.9 percent in July, up nearly half a percentage point over June and the highest it has been all year. But if you’re jobless, particularly for the long-term jobless, the rate is 100 percent and holding — and people are frustrated.
“People around here, they’re struggling. People are stealing the manhole covers — it’s just that bad around here now,” said Purvis Richardson, 43, of Orangeburg, leaving the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce office here Friday afternoon with an updated resume in his hand.

“You got people running to these scrapyards, trying to sell anything, man. That’s why you see people tearing up $20,000 air-conditioner units for $50 worth of copper. It’s that bad,” said Richardson, who said he has not worked since 2009, when he lost his job of 10 years at a food-processing plant after “some bad product got out the door” and the blame fell to him.

Orangeburg County’s unemployment rate soared to 17.7 percent last month, according to figures released Friday, catapulting the county from 10th place to 4th place in the state’s unemployment sweepstakes, an honor nobody is trying to win. Only Marlboro, Allendale and Marion counties had higher rates, topping out at 20 percent.

Report: S.C. among nation’s worst at regulating coal ponds

South Carolina is among the 12 worst states in the country for protecting the public and the environment from coal ash pollution, a new report says.

The report, released Wednesday by Earthjustice and Appalachian Mountain Advocates, said that state laws and regulations overseeing coal ash disposal are deficient to protect health and drinking water across the country.

South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia and Alabama are among the 12 worst states for oversight of coal ash waste disposal, the environmental groups said in a news release summarizing the report.

Educational Preparedness Is Key in the 21st Century!

Minister Farrakhan challenges educators at 3-day conference in Chicago

“If a curriculum does not prepare a student for life itself, then it is a worthless curriculum,” said Minister Farrakhan during his August 6 keynote address wrapping up the Nation of Islam's 4th Annual Educational Conference themed: “Developing A Nation of Readers.”

Minister Farrakhan said the Western world's educational system was designed to place educators under the control of the society's elite rulers making their student's unfit to become masters of their own destinies creating perpetual servants and slaves.

“He never educated you to be a ruler! He educated you to be ruled and to love it!” said the Minister. “You are a dreamer but not bringing dreams into reality. You live in a dream world, you live in a world of illusion that's why you go to sleep at night tormented because you never have achieved your dreams!”

Creating a supreme curriculum, supreme educators for students

He challenged teachers and educators to enact God-centered solutions in an educational system that has “flatlined” and failed to cultivate and educate Black children to achieve their inherent greatness. “We have to challenge this educational system or get out of it,” said Min. Farrakhan.

Conference organizers wanted to provide practical ways to improve teachers, administrators and schools based on techniques and curriculum that properly prepare students for life.

“Whether it be the study technology or whether it be promoting literacy, the Minister wants us to get out into the community and help eliminate illiteracy in our community, we're just making it practical and hands-on,” said Dr. Larry Muhammad.

It is good to know that I am not alone in this assessment.  Perhaps the great teachings I'd received from my dad growing up in Bronx, N.Y. prepared me for such truths.  I hope that you, the readers, will take this article in a good spirit.  It is not about religion.  It is not about whether your faith-based is Christianity, or if you are a Muslim, or not.  It's not about whether you are a Jehovah Witness, or a Buddhist.

We - ALL OF US - must understand what is needed to educate our child[ren] with the understanding that it is their future - it is our legacy that must be preserved academically, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Creative School Fundraising Projects Is The Answer!

Thinking Out-of-the-Box Generating Revenue For Your Child’s School in the 21st Century!

By Miriam G. Aw

As I was sweeping my living room floor one lovely dry hot sunny August morning, I begun to think how wonderful an experience I had as the Chairperson of the PTO Fundraising Committee at St. James-Gaillard Elementary School located in Eutawville, S.C., and as elected  President of the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) a few short months later.

One of things I believe whole-heartedly about school fundraising is that it should be ’independently run’ by the school itself, and/or students!

Selling candy, for example, has become a traditional staple for many schools to engage in when seeking to raise revenue for any particular project, activity, or event.  Instead of selling candy (or anything else for that matter) for a company that only pay-out small percentages plus offering low-cost prizes, which in my opinion is insulting to say the least,  the school should start their own fundraising projects (i.e., bake sales, carnival, bazaars), just to name a few.

By doing so will allow all funds to remain in-house with internal revenue that can be used for whatever purpose, and the beauty of it is that it remains internal.

free phones, blackberry, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, HTC and more for T-Mobile

In addition, the monies that are generated through independent endeavors allows the students to learn networking business skills, to include sharpening their mathematic computations, develop work ethics, and it will help them to observe statistical patterns of sales versus non-sales in any given week, month, or year.

It is time to teach our youngsters the value of independent enterprise by giving them a chance to explore various options to help increase revenue for any given cause relating to their school. Parents, guardians, teachers, and faculty, need to understand that today’s market demand customer-based products and services that will benefit consumers.  After all, like adults, youngsters of all ages use cell phones, have satellite dishes in their homes, and they all are seeking ways to cut costs, and save money in every way they can.

The bottom line is simple: You’ve got to give the people want they want, so why not have your school (and students) offer what the people want, and in most cases, need?

Free DISH Network Satellite TV System

The truth of the matter is that your basic school fundraisers, such as selling candy that most people do not need due to health reasons, lack creativity, innovation, and are down-right boring, despite the great efforts made by parents, guardians, neighbors, friends, etc., who support their child[ren], and the school, as it should be!

Writing about this brings me to mind about an animation program called “Boondocks,“ by creator, Aaron McGruder, who illustrates what I’ve been saying for decades about schools using the students to sell many of these companies products, thus receiving so little in return with prizes that are far less in cost than the amount of [their] products being sold.

The second episode “The Fundraiser”  on Disk 2 of the Third Season of Boondocks points out how Riley Freeman, a feisty rebellious provocative-thinking young eight-year old, who is the grandson of Robert Jebediah Freeman, his legal guardian, accurately depict the phrase “Pimping these children” in the context that a school, which is ran by the State is receiving 5% revenue from a candy company by allowing the students to  candy sell candy on their behalf.  And in return, these same children are offered cheesy prizes with a value that is far less than what the candy actually cost to buy.

The sad thing about it is that it took an animated program that is riddled with profane language, but articulated in a shrewd and perceptive tone, to bring the truthful reality about these school fundraiser tactics.

Whether you choose to agree, or not, this topic is evident enough to bring such an issue in the forefront, in spite of how it was presented.

Undoubtedly, once you begin to take the initiative of taking control of your school’s fundraising projects independently that will benefit the students and the school, you will receive skepticism at first.

Believe me, I know.  I’ve been there.  And as a result of it, every event that took place on an independent basis turned out very well, thanks to the efforts of the people who had served on the fundraising committee, and the elected co-members (Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, etc.) of the PTO who, too, saw my vision.

One of the biggest fundraising achievements was when I started a ‘gift store’ inside the school, so that the elementary students could be able to buy holiday gifts for their loved ones without them knowing what it is because I offered free gift wrapping to the students.  They loved it!  In fact, these same children are now all grown up, and whenever they see me, they tell me how much they loved the idea of the gift store inside their school!

And let me point out that those candy and pizza companies, for example, who’ve relied on your schools’ participation for decades to sell their items will not like you, not one bit!  But hey, they’ll get over it!

And the parents & guardians will love it so much, you’ll see an increase in school meetings!

Do You Have Any Homework? Nooo!

By Miriam G. Aw

Let’s be honest.  How many times have you asked your daughter, or son, or both, if they have any homework once they got home from school?  More likely the answer is no!

Too often than not, daily assigned homework given by teachers in public schools are becoming more obsolete everyday!  And that alone is a damn shame!  I am an advocate for daily & weekend homework.

When I attended school, daily home-work assignment was a part of my life.  Everyone whom I grew up with had homework.  In fact, homework was assigned daily, to be done over the weekend, and it was a given to have homework assigned while school was closed during holiday vacation.

There are skeptics who question whether daily  homework assignments are necessary for our children to do.  I say that it is necessary, and we can no longer afford to 'dumb-down' their education!

The ‘dumbing-down’ educational system creates our present generation of youths to become more illiterate, grammatically incorrect, and awful spellers!  Have you checked out Facebook, Myspace, or any other social network site lately?  There are more abbreviations, and acronyms, used today than ever before!  [Go to http://futurehealthcareprofessionals.blogspot.com to learn medical terminology, and its abbreviations].

To add insult to injury, all of these negative attributes are designed for this generation, and the generation before and after them, to fail.
Yes, that’s right . . . FAIL!  How in the hell can any child be expected to compete with their peers by taking the lead to better themselves both on an academic and vocational levels when they are not guided to do so?  When did it become shameful in life wanting to speak, read, spell, and write well in order to secure a prosperous future on an academic, or vocational level?

Despite the efforts made by President Obama’s call to raise our present generation of youths to take-on the world by getting a good education falls short of the fact that in order for our youths to get a good education, we must have good teachers to provide ’whole’ education to our children without use of fear, or prejudice!

The bottom line is that mothers are their children’s first teacher in life.  And once their child[ren] attend school for the first time, it is up to the mother to ensure that his or her child receive the same ‘food of thought’ at school as it’s given at home.  In other words, no teacher has the right to undermine what had been taught at home, especially if what is taught at home propels the child to reach greater heights academically, vocationally, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Homework is not a dirty word.  And it should not be consider as a bothersome chore to discourage teachers from checking their students‘ papers at their home, or office.

Sadly, some teachers chose not to give homework because they, too, attend school to achieve their Master’s degree, or Doctorate, and checking students’ homework papers are not as important as their quest to achieve their educational objective and goal!

Essentially, to have homework means that the child will make good use of using the dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, the Internet, etc.  And when homework is given daily, over the weekend, and during Spring Break, the likelihood of these children spending time in front of the television, or playing video games will lessen in time.

Make money giving away free cell phones!

Today, a myriad of students who have not acquire the skills to build their vocabulary, comprehend what they’ve read, nor write lengthy essays with correct grammar are high in numbers throughout the country.  Even many colleges lack giving regular reading assignments to students, and are skimping with the materials in the required books needed for the desired curriculum.

By routinely giving daily and weekend homework assignments, to include essays, and lengthy textual content, to youngsters throughout elementary, middle and high school, helps to prepare youngsters early to achieve greater success in their higher learning when they attend college, or any other type of post-secondary educational institution to assure that whatever career field of interest these youngsters chose to do in life, the likelihood of them doing well increases one hundred fold!

Frankly speaking, certain career oriented professions should be taught early starting in, and throughout, middle school and high school, such as the medical field, for example.

So, parents, if you need to go shopping, visit relatives, and/or need to attend your place-of-worship, then take your child’s homework with you for them to do!  It takes both parties to ensure that your child’s educational future is sustained with commitment, desire, and persistence.

And if your child is not receiving regular or no homework, then demand your child’s teacher to give daily and weekend homework!  Encourage your child to use dictionaries, thesauruses, encyclopedias, as well as learning to use the Internet effectively.

Oh, and before I go, it is a great idea to have your child go a step further in his or her assignments.  Teach them not to wait to be instructed to read certain pages in their instruction book.  For example, if your child's teacher request that their assignment is read pages 10 through 19, then encourage your child to go a bit further, and read some extra pages without being told to do so by their teacher.

We must encourage our youngsters to be leaders.  We need to teach them how to 'lead,' instead of 'following' to the point they become mere puppets bouncing up and down as if they don't have a brain cell in their heads!

DEMAND DAILY HOMEWORK!  DEMAND WEEKEND HOMEWORK!  It will pay-off in the long run, and reaping the rewards years later will be sweet!
