13 inmates hurt, shots fired during 'New Folsom' prison riot

A prisoner was shot and wounded and 12 others were sent to the hospital with “stab and slash wounds and head trauma” after a riot involving 60 inmates broke out Wednesday at a prison in Folsom, California, officials said.

Officers at California State Prison-Sacramento – which houses mostly maximum-security inmates – fired six bullets from a rifle during their efforts to stop the fighting, according to a statement on the prison’s website.

California's state prisons have been plagued by hunger strikes, occasional violence and overcrowding and remain at more than 50 percent above capacity, despite a massive shifting of low-level offenders to county jails that began last year, Reuters reported.

Chinese students stage anti-Japan protest in Seoul over disputed islands

SEOUL, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- A group of Chinese students staged a protest near the Japanese embassy in Seoul on Thursday to urge the Japanese government to halt its purchase of disputed islands at the center of an escalating territorial row between Beijing and Tokyo.

About 50 Chinese students studying in South Korea rallied to express their fury at Japan's decision to purchase disputed islands in the East China Sea known as Diaoyu in China. Scuffles broke out between South Korean police and the demonstrators as the students tried to march toward the Japanese embassy.

A heavy police presence outside the embassy prevented the protesters from approaching the embassy building, and that the students held their demonstration near the embassy. They strongly denounced Japan's action as "a clear violation of China's territorial sovereignty." The students chanted slogans such as "We can't accept the violation of our national territory" and " Withdraw the illegal purchase".
