This Story Could Save Your Life
Grease fires happen everyday across the state of South Carolina. For some people, their first reaction would be to take the frying pan to the sink or to douse it in water.
But that's the worst thing you can do.
What Willie Mae didn't know is that you never, ever put water on a grease fire.
According to firefighters, the best way to put the blaze out is to grab a mitt and then cover the frying pan with lid. If you don't have a lid, grab a cookie sheet or pizza pan and put it on top of the pan and press it down. Turn the stove off and leave the cover on the pan for 10 or 20 minutes.
Chief Jenkins says water will make the fire splatter and actually increase the fire.
To make sure this never happens in your home, firefighters suggest homeowners install StoveTop Firestop.
Its a tuna sized can that is mounted in pairs of two above the stoves burners. The can has a fuse that ignites when flames from a grease fire reach the bottom of the canister. When that happens, the can explodes spreading fire extinguishing chemicals on the fire putting it out instantly.
