A year later, no answers in fatal shooting
“Bernard Bailey was a gentle giant. This is why the community is so
upset,” said Jean Davis-Capers, president of the Eutawville Branch
NAACP. Bailey was shot multiple times in the Eutawville Town Hall
parking lot on Porcher Avenue on May 2, 2011, during a confrontation
with then-police chief Richard “Rick” Combs.
Bailey had gone to the town hall that morning to address a traffic ticket issued to his daughter by Eutawville police.
Orangeburg County Coroner Samuetta Marshall reported the 54-year-old Bailey died as the result of gunshot wounds. He was shot twice in the chest and once in the shoulder, the coroner said.
Both the State Law Enforcement Division and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have investigated the fatal shooting. Now, the probe is in the hands of the U.S. Department of Justice.
