Dangerous weather forecast for northeast, including New York

Risk includes thunderstorms, hail and even tornadoes across an area that stretches from Indiana to New England.

The storms are expected to have an impact on a large section of the country.

Severe thunderstorms were expected to batter much of the northeastern U.S. Thursday, including New York.

The National Weather service said there is a moderate risk of severe storms for an area stretching eastward from western Indiana to New England, including much of New York and New Jersey.

The moderate risk area is surrounded by a larger area stretching from Oklahoma to the Atlantic coast with a slight risk of severe thunderstorms.

Heavy rain, lightning, destructive winds, hail and even tornadoes are possible, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Bill Deger.

In New York City, the Department of Buildings warned owners to secure their buildings.
