I-20 widening set to begin soon
A nearly three-year project to widen Interstate 20 northeast of the capital city is scheduled to begin this fall. The widening and resurfacing project will add one lane each way to a 6.7 mile stretch of the interstate between I-77 and Spears Creek Road (exit 82).
The $75 million project was originally slated to start in late 2010, but was delayed due to changes needed in contract documents.
The completed project will include paved shoulders and three 12-foot travel lanes in both directions.
Noise barriers will be placed along Polo Road in the vicinity of Polo Road Elementary School. In addition, barriers will be placed near Chesterbrook Academy and along the entire length of the project between Smallwood Road and Clemson Road.
