Dr. Clemmie Webber, honored mother and educator, dies at 99

Scientist, educator, author, mentor, pioneer, community leader, wife and mother. Dr. Clemmie Embly Webber lived a full life, sharing it with the community through her service. It was a life that came to an end Wednesday. She was 99.
“She is just what Orangeburg is about,” Orangeburg historian Richard Reid said. “She had the desire to make Orangeburg a better place through her works and her involvement in the community.
“She was about helping one another and bringing about the goodness that is in our community.”

Steel processing company investing $35M, creating 40 jobs in Union County
A Spanish steel processing company announced Wednesday it will
invest $50 million over the next decade to build a production plant in
Union County and create 65 jobs.
Gonvarri Steel Services, a
subsidiary of Spain-based BMW supplier Gestamp Corp., said it will
initially invest $35 million and create 40 jobs, with another $15
million and 25 jobs expected within 10 years.
The
company will set up shop next to its parent-company's operation on LSP
Road and supply it with up to 100,000 tons of processed steel products
annually. The facility is expected to be in operation by July 2013.

The posting lists the salary range as $69,947 to $104,920. All applicants must have a minimum of 10 years of law enforcement experience.
The posting closes on Aug. 23.
Another unknown at this point is whether interim Chief Saundra Rhodes has thrown her name into the fold.
1,500 jobs available at Continental Tire site
SUMTER, SC (WIS) -Get your resumes together, more than 1,500 jobs are now available at Continental Tire in Sumter County.Construction is moving right along on the new plant, and it will be completed by the end of the year.
On Friday, the automotive supplier announced it's ready to hire 60 people.
Craig Baartman is project manager and is looking for the new employees.
"This is a game-changer," Baartman said of the new facility. "We believe this is a game-changer for Sumter."
The company is currently looking for skilled workers in engineering and management.
Baartman expects the new 1 million square foot site will bring growth to Highway 521.
"It will attract business, people, tourists," Baartman said.

Goose Creek High graduate killed in Afghanistan

GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - The U.S. Department of Defense announced that a graduate of Goose Creek High School died last week while on dismounted patrol in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Army Pfc. Julian L. Colvin, 21, died July 22 after suffering wounds from an enemy improvised explosive device. Colvin, originally from Birmingham, Alabama, moved to Goose Creek in 2008.According to a former teacher of Colvin's at Goose Creek High School, he graduated from the school in 2010.
