Ex-Marine kills 2, self at NJ supermarket

OLD BRIDGE, N.J. (AP) — An ex-Marine wearing military clothing opened fire on more than a dozen co-workers at a New Jersey supermarket early Friday, killing two of them and himself, authorities said.

The 23-year-old man left his shift at a Pathmark store in Old Bridge Township around 3:30 a.m. and returned a half-hour later to the closed store with a handgun and an AK-47 assault rifle, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said. About 12 to 14 workers were still there.

The man fired at least 16 rounds from the rifle at the first workers he saw, killing an 18-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man as other workers hid, Kaplan said.

"I do not believe that they were specifically targeted. I believe everybody in the store was a target," said Kaplan.

The gunman then killed himself, said Kaplan.

Sheriff: Man stole doctor’s ID and license, treated 500-plus patients in SC during past year

Cobb County Sheriff/Associated Press - This undated booking photo provided by the Cobb County Sheriff in Marietta, Ga., shows Ernest Addo, 48, who was arrested on Aug. 24, 2012 for identity theft and practicing medicine without a license. When Addo’s friend went to Africa for a year, he assumed his buddy’s identity, all the way down to the man’s medical license. Authorities said Addo saw up to 500 patients at five senior homes in Columbia, S.C., before he was discovered.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A man stole a physician’s identity and pretended to be a doctor for a year in South Carolina, and now investigators are combing through medical records to see whether he harmed any of the hundreds of patients he treated, authorities said.

Ernest Addo of Austell, Ga., is charged with unlawful practice of medicine and obtaining goods under false pretense, authorities said.

Addo doesn’t have a medical license in the U.S. But he assumed a doctor friend’s identity, getting a driver’s license and presenting the massive amount of paperwork needed to prove he was a doctor. The documents were given to him by the friend in hopes they could open a medical clinic together when the real doctor returned from a yearlong trip to Ghana, Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said.

The real doctor, Arthur Kennedy, said he is embarrassed and devastated by what his friend did.

A family acquaintance who did yard work for the family of 15-year-old cheerleader Gabrielle Swainson has been arrested and charged with kidnapping, after police found blood and DNA from the South Carolina teen on duct tape near the man’s home.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott called 52-year-old Freddie Grant a “career criminal” in announcing the arrest, according to WACH Fox News in Columbia, S.C.

Authorities believe Grant forced the teen from her home in Columbia and took her to his home in Elgin, S.C.

Authorities said Grant is being “completely uncooperative” in helping to locate the girl.

Swainson’s mother, Elvia Swainson, said she went to work at 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 18 and left her sleeping daughter at their home. When she returned at 7:30 a.m., the teen was missing and the alarm was going off.

There were no signs of forced entry and all of Gabrielle’s belongings, including shoes, clothes, wallet, and cell phone were still at her home.

Authorities are still hoping that Swainson will be found alive. More than 100 0fficers have fanned out to search a junkyard near the suspect’s home.

Do Cubans Get Better Health Care Than Americans?

cuban health care system

HAVANA — What Cuba says it spends on medical services is a fraction of what it costs hospitals to provide the same services in the United States. A comparison of some medical procedures in the two countries:

- Cost per day for inpatient hospital stay: $5.49 in Cuba; $1,994 in the U.S.

- Inpatient hernia surgery: $14.59 in Cuba; $12,489 in the U.S.

- Hip-fracture repair: $72.15 in Cuba; $14,263 in the U.S.

- Kidney transplant: $4,902 in Cuba; $48,758 in the U.S.

Cuban authorities did not reveal how they calculated their figures, but said careful study was involved.

While some medical goods are imported, Cuba produces many medicines and labor costs are significantly lower than in the United States, with one doctor saying Cuban specialists earn $25 a month.

Cuban patients also often bring their own sterile bed sheets, hypodermic needles, food and water.

Shannakay Hunter, Jamaican Immigrant, Convicted For Sham Marriage To American Soldier

WICHITA, Kan. -- A federal jury convicted a Jamaican woman Thursday of entering into a "sham marriage" with a Kansas soldier so she could get legal immigration status.

Joshua Priest

Shannakay Hunter, 28, fought back tears after the jury returned guilty verdicts for conspiracy to commit marriage fraud, marriage fraud and lying to the government.

Hunter, who lives in New York, faces up to five years imprisonment on each count. She is likely to get far less, if any, prison time under federal guidelines during sentencing, which has not been set.

The government contends her 2010 marriage to Joshua Priest, 23, then a private at Fort Riley, was a fake arrangement to give her a green card and him $1,500 in extra monthly benefits for married soldiers. Priest has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit marriage fraud and wire fraud in a deal with the government for leniency in exchange for his testimony against Hunter.

You Are Drinking What?

With water in short supply across the country, it's time to take a serious look at recycling sewage

Almost 60% of the continental U.S. is now living through drought conditions, and half of all counties have been declared disaster areas. From coast to coast, cities and towns are placing restrictions on water consumption. With the nation so hot and dry and no end in sight, some are calling for a drastic solution: drinking our own wastewater—that is, what we usually flush down our toilets.

Not directly, of course. But drinking recycled wastewater is a relatively cheap and effective means of obtaining a lot of water. If all the wastewater dumped into waterways or the ocean were recycled instead, the U.S. would increase its water supply by as much as 27%, according to a report released earlier this year by the National Academy of Sciences. Nationally, that amounts to 12 billion gallons.

[image] Alex Nabaum

The process for recycling wastewater is more rigorous than for "regular" tap water, with stronger filtration.

As the NAS report noted, "With recent advances in technology and treatment design, potable reuse can reduce the concentration of chemical and microbial contaminants to levels comparable to or lower than those present in many drinking water supplies."

Recycled wastewater is also cheaper than other alternatives. Desalination—turning seawater into drinking water—sounds more palatable, but estimated costs can run one-half to two-thirds more than for a recycled wastewater facility. That is largely due to the amount of filtration required: Wastewater has roughly 1,000 parts per million of salt, but seawater has roughly 35,000 parts per million. Desalination is also, of course, limited to states near seawater.

Fear of a Black President

As a candidate, Barack Obama said we needed to reckon with race and with America’s original sin, slavery. But as our first black president, he has avoided mention of race almost entirely. In having to be “twice as good” and “half as black,” Obama reveals the false promise and double standard of integration.

Bill Sanderson

The irony of President Barack Obama is best captured in his comments on the death of Trayvon Martin, and the ensuing fray. Obama has pitched his presidency as a monument to moderation. He peppers his speeches with nods to ideas originally held by conservatives. He routinely cites Ronald Reagan. He effusively praises the enduring wisdom of the American people, and believes that the height of insight lies in the town square. Despite his sloganeering for change and progress, Obama is a conservative revolutionary, and nowhere is his conservative character revealed more than in the very sphere where he holds singular gravity—race.

RIP, Count von Count: Sesame Street Actor Jerry Nelson Dead at 78

Shall we count the ways children around the world loved Jerry Nelson? Read this in the voice of Count von Count, please: One, he voiced the aforementioned number-loving vampire to life on Sesame Street.

Those not in their more impressionable years might have preferred the censored spoof of the Count's innocent-turned-very-inappropriate counting that went viral.

Two, he gave life to the purple-haired explorer Gobo Fraggle on Fraggle Rock. And if that's not enough, three, he popped up not only on The Muppet Show but movies and specials throughout the years. Which makes it all the sadder that Nelson passed away yesterday.
