Ex-Marine kills 2, self at NJ supermarket

OLD BRIDGE, N.J. (AP) — An ex-Marine wearing military clothing opened fire on more than a dozen co-workers at a New Jersey supermarket early Friday, killing two of them and himself, authorities said.

The 23-year-old man left his shift at a Pathmark store in Old Bridge Township around 3:30 a.m. and returned a half-hour later to the closed store with a handgun and an AK-47 assault rifle, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said. About 12 to 14 workers were still there.

The man fired at least 16 rounds from the rifle at the first workers he saw, killing an 18-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man as other workers hid, Kaplan said.

"I do not believe that they were specifically targeted. I believe everybody in the store was a target," said Kaplan.

The gunman then killed himself, said Kaplan.

Twenty-three-year-old Terence Tyler (pictured) was discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps. in 2010.

The military says he never served overseas and would not say whether he was discharged honorably.

A law-enforcement official briefed on the case confirmed that Tyler was the shooter who opened fire in military clothing at the Pathmark store early Friday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because his agency is not in charge of the investigation.

While in the service, Tyler was an infantryman. His home of record was in Brooklyn.

OLD BRIDGE — Cristina LoBrutto, 18, of Old Bridge had just graduated from high school in June. Last night was the first time she’d been scheduled to work an overnight shift at the local supermarket, her friend said.

Bryan Breen, 24, of Old Bridge, was also an Old Bridge High School graduate. He’d completed his studies there a few years ago, and was attending Middlesex County College, a friend said. He was also working at the Pathmark on Route 9 in Old Bridge early this morning.

An ex-Marine -- identified by WABC-TV news in New York as 23-year-old Terence S. Tyler of Old Bridge -- began working at the store about two weeks ago, according to a local official.

Around 3:30 a.m., that 23-year-old man left the store, and returned with an AK-47 and a handgun, authorities said.

He began firing, apparently randomly, according to authorities.

(Reuters) - An earthquake of 7.6 magnitude struck off the Philippines on Friday killing one person, damaging roads and bridges and sending people fleeing to higher ground in fear of a tsunami, a politician and authorities said.

The quake was centred off the east coast, 91 miles (146 km) off the town of Guiuan in Samar province at a depth of about 20 miles (32 km), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A man stole a physician’s identity and pretended to be a doctor for a year in South Carolina, and now investigators are combing through medical records to see whether he harmed any of the hundreds of patients he treated, authorities said.

Ernest Addo of Austell, Ga., is charged with unlawful practice of medicine and obtaining goods under false pretense, authorities said.

Addo doesn’t have a medical license in the U.S. But he assumed a doctor friend’s identity, getting a driver’s license and presenting the massive amount of paperwork needed to prove he was a doctor. The documents were given to him by the friend in hopes they could open a medical clinic together when the real doctor returned from a yearlong trip to Ghana, Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said.

The real doctor, Arthur Kennedy, said he is embarrassed and devastated by what his friend did.
