SCSU board chair says it's business as usual

A lack of legislative consensus means South Carolina State University trustees will continue business as usual, acting Chairman Dr. John Corbitt said.

“We have kept working hard. We are very happy about the new interim president and everyone has continued to function,” Corbitt said. “It has had no effect on our board.

“We will continue to do our job as we always have. We have not tried to spend any time on what the Legislature is doing with the university. That’s not our job.”

Legislation designed to restructure the board died when a General Assembly conference committee failed to iron out differences between House and Senate versions of a bill. The House sought a more sweeping change, including removing all sitting trustees and placing S.C. State under the direction of a temporary board.

Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter, D-Orangeburg, said the introduction of new legislation next year depends on what happens in the interim.
