Food stamp requests rise on Long Island

Food stamp requests are surging in Nassau and Suffolk counties, creating lengthy delays in getting assistance to families.

Photo credit: Newsday / Danielle Finkelstein | Joseph Bonilla, of Freeport, said he reluctantly applied for food stamps after being laid off from Nassau County's probation department. His wife, a dental assistant, also lost her job, and the couple were concerned about providing for their two children. The family was turned down for making too much in unemployment. (April 17, 2012)
Food stamp caseloads have more than doubled since 2008 -- to 37,500 in Nassau and 53,400 in Suffolk -- because of the recessionand state efforts to streamline applications and encourage participation in the program, officials said.
Numerous Long Island families now are waiting beyond the 30-day federal limit for determinations about whether they're eligible for food stamps.

Audrey Grabarkiewicz, 46, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

A former South Carolina preschool teacher who threw booze- and pot-fueled sex parties for local teens was spared jail time and sentenced to probation instead.

Audrey B. Grabarkiewicz, 46, will avoid a prison cell as long as she stays out of trouble during a three year period and serves 120 hours of community service, a judge ruled on Thursday.

Grabarkiewicz, a mom of three, and another former teacher, Sarah Jane Lindsay, were busted in September 2010 after police discovered they were hosting summertime sex gatherings for middle school and high school students, the Spartanburg Herald-Journal reported.

Prosecutors said the middle-aged pair plied the teens with booze and pot and had sex with several of them.

Grabarkiewicz, who taught preschool at Lake Bowen Baptist Church, faced 10 counts of corrupting a minor.

Lindsay, 44, who taught 4-year-old kindergarten at Boiling Springs Elementary, faced nine counts of the same charge, as well as the more serious charge of having sex with someone under 14.

The age of consent in South Carolina is 16.

TD Bank to ramp up hiring in SC in August

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Hiring for TD Bank’s expansion plans for South Carolina is ramping up as its Greenville customer call center opens next month with 70 people.
The call center is part of the bank’s plans for a regional hub, announced last November. Bank officials say the center will employ about 260 workers by year’s end and 550 employees once fully staffed.
They are among the 1,600 jobs the bank expects to add in South Carolina by 2016 — 1,400 at its expanded corporate offices off Interstate 85 and 200 jobs at a technology center in Lexington. The bank currently employs 1,465 people statewide.
TD Bank President and CEO Bharat Masrani said the ‘‘real activity’’ in hiring will be at the end of this year and next year.
