School officials in Fla. try to block Michelle Obama visit

Some Miami-Dade (Fla.) School Board members are trying to block a visit to a school by first lady Michelle Obama scheduled for today on the grounds that it amounts to a campaign visit, The Miami Herald is reporting.

By Julie Jacobson, AP
Miami-Dade School Board member Renier Diaz de la Portilla has called for the event at Barbara Goleman Senior High School in Miami Lakes, Fla., to be cancelled while board member Carlos Curbelo wants the board attorney to reconsider an opinion that the appearance meets legal requirements, the Herald reports.
Diaz de la Portilla is running for a Florida state House seat as a Republican and Curbelo has worked as a Republican strategist, according to the Herald.

"There's a difference between official visits to schools by elected leaders and events that are for the sole purpose of advancing the interests of a political campaign," Curbelo tells the Herald.
The Herald also published a statement from Diaz de la Portilla: "The use of public schools whose only focus should be to educate our children for political gain is downright wrong. Don't these liberals have boundaries? Our schools are places for learning, not places for politicking."

DirecTV-Viacom Dispute May Affect Access for 20 Million Customers

DirecTV customers may lose access to Viacom’s 17 television channels, including Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central, at the end of the day on Tuesday because of a dispute between the two companies.

The blackout, if it happens, would affect DirecTV’s 19.9 million customers in the United States — almost one-fifth of all the households that subscribe to cable or satellite television across the country. It is the latest in a series of fights over the fees paid by distributors like DirecTV for bundles of channels owned by programmers like Viacom. Earlier this month customers of one of DirecTV’s competitors, the Dish Network, lost access to the channels AMC, IFC and WE TV.

The fight between DirecTV and Viacom was publicized late Monday night by Viacom, when it issued a statement that negotiations for a carriage contract had “reached an impasse.” Viacom asserted that “DirecTV refuses to consider a fair deal that recognizes the value of Viacom programming.”

Dems blast Haley vetoes on arts, teacher pay raise

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Gov. Nikki Haley issued some reckless budget vetoes last week, according to several Democratic South Carolina lawmakers who said Monday that she effectively shifted a $10 million expense for teacher pay raises onto local school boards and didn't even take the time to speak to officials with at least one agency she is trying to eliminate.

Among the $67.5 million in spending that Haley vetoed was the appropriation for the South Carolina Commission of the Arts for this budget year. Since the budget year has already begun, the state comptroller told the agency to incur no more expenses, effectively shutting the commission down until the Legislature returns next week to take up the governor's vetoes.

Haley's 2010 general election opponent, state Sen. Vincent Sheheen, said the governor's decision on the Arts Commission was based on her own whims, not what's best for the state.

"She may not care if she makes us look like some kind of third-world country. But I care," said Sheheen of Camden, who held the news conference Monday with two other Democratic lawmakers in the sweltering parking lot of the Arts Commission's building to emphasize that the agency's doors were shut.

But the Arts Commission veto shouldn't have come as a surprise. The governor targeted the agency for elimination in her first State of the State address and vetoed the commission's funding last year too.

Speaking at a news conference, Chavez said he's "totally free" of cancer and plans to begin actively campaigning soon following months of radiation treatment, physical rehabilitation and medical exams.

"I feel in better physical condition every day," he said.
